Is Cyprus (Republic of Cyprus / Southern Cyprus) Safe to Travel to in 2026?
Risk level: Low risk
Last updated
Overview
Very safe and highly developed Mediterranean island nation. It offers excellent tourism infrastructure, beautiful beaches, historic sites, and a relaxed atmosphere. The southern part of Cyprus is an EU member state with Schengen-like rules, strong institutions, and a high standard of living. The unresolved division with the Turkish-controlled north is the main political issue, but it has little practical impact on tourists staying in the south. Cyprus is one of the safest and most convenient Mediterranean destinations, especially for families, couples, and travelers seeking a low-stress beach and culture holiday.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October; July and August are very hot on the coast.
Safety
Low crime overall. Very safe for tourists in the south. Occasional minor issues in nightlife areas. The main risk is the unresolved division with the north, but this has minimal impact on daily travel in the Republic of Cyprus. Road safety is good.
Recommendations
Normal precautions are sufficient. Use licensed taxis, ride-hailing apps, or rental cars. Tourist areas are very safe and well organized. Stay aware near the Green Line (buffer zone) but it rarely affects visitors. English is widely spoken in tourist areas and resorts.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.
Good healthcare with EU standards. Tap water is safe in most places. Pharmacies are widely available. Emergency services are reliable and professional.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most nationalities. Schengen-like rules apply. The country is easy to reach with good flight connections from Europe.
Laws
Standard EU laws. Drug laws are enforced. Respect the buffer zone. Laws are applied consistently and fairly.
Other notes
Great food, beaches, and history. Very tourist-friendly with excellent infrastructure. Much safer and more relaxed than mainland Greece or Turkey. The southern part of the island has a pleasant Mediterranean climate and a relaxed pace of life. Winters are mild, while summers are warm and sunny. English is widely spoken.
