Is Cuba Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Extreme risk

Last updated

Current alert: Cuba is currently unable to reliably provide basic goods and services to its population due to the ongoing blockade and resulting shortages (food, fuel, medicine, electricity). Extreme caution - travel only if essential and self-sufficient.

Overview

Caribbean country with vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes, but currently suffering from severe economic collapse, shortages, and infrastructure breakdown.

Best time to visit

November to April is the drier high season; May to October is wetter and hotter with storm risk.

Safety

Low violent crime against tourists. Petty theft and scams are common. The main issues are economic breakdown and poor infrastructure rather than widespread violent crime.

Recommendations

Be cautious of petty theft in Havana and tourist areas. Expect frequent shortages (food, fuel, medicine). Use official taxis. Avoid political discussions.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Healthcare has deteriorated due to shortages. Tap water is not safe. Mosquito-borne diseases are present.

Entry and exit

Visa (tourist card) required. Relatively straightforward.

Laws

Strict on drugs. Political criticism can lead to problems. Government surveillance is common.

Other notes

Incredible culture, music, and colonial architecture. Can feel very run-down and difficult due to long term economic mismanagement, foreign interference and recent shortages. Tourism infrastructure is basic outside main resorts.

Emergency numbers: Police 106, Ambulance 104, Fire 105.
