Is Croatia Safe to Travel to in 2026?
Risk level: Low-Moderate risk
Last updated
Overview
Beautiful Mediterranean country with a world-class coastline, historic cities, and excellent food and wine. One of Europe's most popular and safe tourist destinations.
Best time to visit
May to September for coast and islands; shoulder months are less crowded. Inland is fine spring to autumn.
Safety
Low violent crime against tourists. Petty theft and pickpocketing are the main issues, especially in major tourist cities during summer. Rural Croatia and smaller towns are very calm and safe.
Recommendations
Be very careful with belongings in crowded tourist areas (Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb). Pickpocketing is common in peak season. Croatians tend to be more rowdy, so watch yourself if you're into nightlife. Use hotel safes and stay aware in busy spots. Taxis can overcharge you. The rest of the country feels very safe.
Health and tap water
Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.
Good healthcare. Tap water is safe.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most up to 90 days in Schengen. ETIAS expected later in 2026.
Laws
Generally relaxed. Strict on drugs. Well-organized with low corruption.
Other notes
Incredible Adriatic coast and islands. Historic towns like Dubrovnik and Split are highlights. Excellent seafood and wine. Can feel very crowded and touristy in peak season. Good infrastructure and English widely spoken in tourist areas.
Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 112, Fire 112.
