Overview
Stable, peaceful, and one of the most popular and well-developed tourist destinations in Central America. Costa Rica is known for its strong focus on eco-tourism, beautiful rainforests, volcanoes, and beaches. It has relatively good infrastructure compared to many neighbors and a generally positive reputation for safety and friendliness. The country promotes a relaxed 'Pura Vida' lifestyle. While tourist areas are well organized and generally safe, non-tourist zones can be poorer and less secure.
Best time to visit
Dry season roughly December to April on much of the Pacific side; the Caribbean side has a different rain pattern.
Safety
Low violent crime compared to most of Central America. Petty theft and scams are the main issues, especially in tourist areas like San José, Jacó, and Tamarindo. Rainy season flooding and occasional earthquakes are natural hazards. Overall, Costa Rica feels much safer and more organized than most countries in the region.
Recommendations
Use reputable tour operators for adventure activities such as zip-lining, rafting, or hiking. Avoid driving at night in rural areas. Use official taxis or Uber in cities. Normal precautions are sufficient in tourist zones. Book popular national parks and activities in advance during peak season.
Health and tap water
Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.
Good private healthcare in major areas. Tap water is generally safe in most places. Dengue and other tropical diseases are present. Pharmacies are widely available in tourist zones. Medical standards are solid for Central America.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most nationalities for 90 days. Easy and straightforward entry process.
Laws
Relatively well-enforced. Strict on drugs. Eco-laws and environmental regulations are taken seriously. Corruption is low by regional standards.
