Overview
Diverse South American country with incredible landscapes, cities, and culture. Security has improved significantly in many areas, but risks remain in certain regions due to crime and armed groups. Tourists are generally safe, but be wary, violent crime against them does happen.
Best time to visit
Many regions are good year-round; dry seasons vary by Andes slope (often December to March and July to August in popular areas).
Safety
Moderate risk overall. Petty theft and scams are common in tourist areas. Violent crime and kidnapping risks exist in some rural and border regions. Major cities have improved but still have robbery and extortion issues.
Recommendations
Stick to well-established tourist areas. Use reputable transportation and avoid isolated areas at night. Be cautious in major cities. Some regions (especially near borders and in parts of the Pacific and Amazon) remain higher risk.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Basic to good healthcare in major cities. Malaria and yellow fever risk in some rural and Amazon areas. Tap water is not safe to drink in most places.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most nationalities up to 90 days.
Laws
Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Corruption exists in some areas.
Other notes
Stunning diversity (Andes, Caribbean coast, Amazon, coffee region). Excellent food and friendly people. Tourism infrastructure is good in popular areas. Can feel chaotic and rough in some cities and rural zones.
Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 112, Fire 112.
