Risk level: Low-Moderate risk
Last updated
Overview
Archipelagic nation off the coast of West Africa. More developed and tourist-friendly than most of the region, with good beaches and growing tourism infrastructure.
Best time to visit
November to June is generally drier and more pleasant.
Safety
Low to moderate risk. Petty crime and scams occur in tourist zones. Violent crime is relatively low compared to mainland Africa. Some areas have issues with drug trafficking, but tourists are rarely directly affected if they stay in resort areas.
Recommendations
Be cautious of petty theft and scams in tourist areas (especially Sal and Boa Vista). Use reputable transportation. The islands are generally safe, but normal precautions apply in urban areas.
Health and tap water
Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.
Basic to good private healthcare in tourist areas. Tap water is generally safe on the main islands. Lower malaria risk than mainland Africa.
Entry and exit
Visa on arrival or e-visa available for most nationalities.
Laws
Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs.
Other notes
Good beaches and growing tourism sector, especially on Sal and Boa Vista. More developed infrastructure than São Tomé. Can feel very touristy on the main resort islands. Food is a mix of Portuguese, African, and Brazilian influences. Tourism is more established than in many other West African countries, but still has a developing feel outside the resorts.
