Overview
Affordable Balkan country with beautiful Black Sea beaches, historic towns, and good mountainous scenery. Generally safe for tourists with low violent crime.
Best time to visit
May to September for Black Sea and cities; mountain hiking is best in summer.
Safety
Low violent crime against tourists. Petty theft and scams occur in bigger cities and tourist spots. Some areas have issues with organized crime, but this rarely affects visitors. Rural Bulgaria is generally very calm.
Recommendations
Watch out for pickpocketing in Sofia and crowded tourist areas. Be cautious with taxis (use apps or agree on a price beforehand). The rest of the country is usually very relaxed and safe.
Health and tap water
Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.
Good healthcare in major cities. Tap water is generally safe but bottled water is recommended in some areas.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most up to 90 days in Schengen. Very straightforward.
Laws
Generally relaxed. Strict on drugs. Low corruption compared to some neighbors.
Other notes
Excellent value for money. Good food and wine. Beautiful coastline and mountains. Can feel a bit rough around the edges in some cities, but overall very tourist-friendly and affordable.
