Risk level: Low-Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

One of the more stable and less corrupt countries in Africa, known for its wildlife and wilderness. Still a developing country with typical regional challenges.

Best time to visit

Dry season May to October is prime for wildlife and cooler nights in the bush.

Safety

Low violent crime against tourists in tourist areas. Petty theft occurs in cities. Main risks are wildlife-related and road safety. Some areas near the borders with Zimbabwe and Namibia are riskier.

Recommendations

Use reputable safari operators. Be cautious in Gaborone and other towns (petty crime exists). Respect wildlife in national parks. Avoid driving at night in rural areas.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Malaria risk in northern areas. Tap water is generally safe in cities but use bottled elsewhere. Healthcare is basic outside major towns.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most up to 90 days.

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on poaching and wildlife products.

Other notes

Excellent wildlife viewing in the Okavango Delta and Chobe. Very clean national parks. Good value for safari experiences compared to South Africa or Kenya.
