Is Bosnia and Herzegovina Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Balkan country with rich history, stunning nature, and a mix of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Yugoslav influences. Generally safe for tourists, but the political situation can be unpredictable.

Best time to visit

May to September for general travel; ski areas are better December to March.

Safety

Low violent crime against tourists. Petty theft occurs in tourist areas. Landmine risk still exists in some rural and forested areas - do not stray from marked paths.

Recommendations

Stick to well-marked paths in rural areas due to landmines from the 1990s war (especially near former front lines). Be cautious in Sarajevo and other cities regarding petty crime.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Basic healthcare in major cities. Tap water is generally ok in urban areas.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most up to 90 days.

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs.

Other notes

Beautiful cities (Sarajevo, Mostar) and nature (Una National Park, mountains). Excellent food and coffee culture. Can feel a bit rough around the edges in some areas but very welcoming overall.

Emergency numbers: Police 122, Ambulance 124, Fire 123.
