Is Bhutan Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Low risk

Last updated

Overview

One of the safest, most stable, and culturally unique countries in Asia. Low crime, pristine environment, and strong national identity. This country is a special type of blue. Safety and order are maintained through government control, isolation and heavy regulation of tourism rather than more 'natural' safety in other blue countries. This way Bhutan can remain pristine and culturally authentic.

Best time to visit

March to May and September to November; monsoon mid-year can disrupt mountain roads.

Safety

Extremely low crime. Very safe for tourists. Occasional minor earthquakes or landslides in mountainous areas. The main 'risk' is altitude in higher regions.

Recommendations

Book through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator (mandatory). Respect local customs and dress modestly at religious sites. Follow the high-value tourism policy.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Good basic healthcare in main towns. Altitude sickness is a real concern in the highlands. Tap water should be treated.

Entry and exit

Strictly controlled. Must book through an approved tour operator and pay the Sustainable Development Fee (around $100/day). Visa is issued on arrival for most nationalities.

Laws

Very strict on drugs, tobacco, and cultural/religious rules. Criticism of the monarchy is restricted. Conservation laws are serious.

Other notes

Extremely clean, orderly, and traditional society. Stunning Himalayan scenery. Tourism is limited and high-end to preserve culture and environment.

Emergency numbers: Police 113, Ambulance 112, Fire 110.
