Is Benin Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Small West African country that is relatively stable compared to its neighbors. It has a rich cultural heritage (especially voodoo traditions) but remains underdeveloped with typical regional security and infrastructure challenges.

Best time to visit

Dry season roughly November to February is usually most comfortable.

Safety

Moderate risk. Petty theft and scams are common. Violent crime exists but is less widespread than in Nigeria. The north of the country has seen increased insecurity due to jihadist activity spilling over from neighboring countries.

Recommendations

Normal precautions are needed. Petty crime and scams are common in Cotonou and other urban areas. Avoid traveling at night. The northern regions near the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger carry higher risk due to spillover from regional instability.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Basic healthcare. Malaria is a major risk. Tap water is not safe. Stomach issues are common for travelers.

Entry and exit

Visa on arrival available for many nationalities. Relatively straightforward process.

Laws

Generally tolerant. Voodoo is widely practiced and culturally important. Drug laws exist but enforcement can be inconsistent.

Other notes

Known for its vibrant voodoo culture and history as the birthplace of the slave trade to the Americas. More stable and relaxed than many neighbors, but still a developing country with limited infrastructure outside the main tourist areas.

Emergency numbers: Police 117, Ambulance 112, Fire 118.
