Risk level: Elevated risk
Last updated
Overview
Densely populated South Asian country with a growing tourism sector, rich history, and natural attractions (including the Sundarbans). Political instability and occasional civil unrest are ongoing risks.
Best time to visit
Winter dry season roughly November to February; avoid peak monsoon if possible.
Safety
Moderate risk. Petty crime, scams, and occasional violent protests occur. Political violence and hartals (strikes) can disrupt travel. Road safety is poor. Some border areas with Myanmar and India have additional risks.
Recommendations
Avoid political demonstrations and large gatherings. Be cautious in Dhaka and other major cities due to traffic, pollution, and petty crime. Stick to well-known tourist areas and use reputable operators.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Basic healthcare in major cities. High risk of waterborne diseases. Tap water is not safe to drink. Air pollution in Dhaka is severe.
Entry and exit
Visa on arrival or e-visa available for most nationalities.
Laws
Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Political criticism can sometimes lead to issues during periods of unrest.
Other notes
Home to the Sundarbans, Cox's Bazar (longest natural beach), and historic sites. Can feel chaotic and overcrowded. Food is excellent and very affordable. Tourism infrastructure is developing but still limited outside major spots.
