Is Antarctica Safe to Travel to in 2026?
Risk level: Low-Moderate risk
Last updated
Overview
The coldest, driest, and windiest continent on Earth. Tourism is only possible through licensed expedition operators. While the environment is extreme, commercial tourism is highly regulated and generally well-managed.
Best time to visit
Southern summer only (roughly November to March), via organized expedition ships.
Safety
Low risk when traveling with professional operators. However, the environment is extremely hostile. Any accident, medical emergency, or equipment failure can become life-threatening quickly due to weather and isolation. Rescue and medical evacuation are often very slow or unavailable in bad conditions. Wildlife can also pose risks if approached.
Recommendations
Only travel with reputable IAATO-member expedition operators. Follow all safety instructions. Independent travel is not permitted for normal tourists. Be aware that medical evacuation can be extremely slow or impossible depending on weather and location.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
No hospitals on the continent. Medical facilities are limited to expedition ships and research stations. Any serious injury or illness usually requires emergency evacuation, which can take days or be impossible during storms.
Entry and exit
No visa required. Access is only possible through approved tour operators under the Antarctic Treaty system.
Laws
Strict environmental protection rules. Removing anything from Antarctica is illegal. All activities must follow the Antarctic Treaty.
Other notes
Incredible natural beauty and wildlife. One of the last truly wild places on Earth. Trips are expensive and physically demanding. Most visits are by ship and last 10-21 days. Note: Independent travel (even with permits) is effectively not available to normal tourists and would carry extreme risk. Such travel is considered black-level due to the lack of support and extreme environment, but since it is not a realistic option for the vast majority of people, it is not modeled in the main rating.
Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 112, Fire 112.
