Risk level: Elevated risk
Last updated
Overview
Large, oil-rich country in Southern Africa that remains deeply scarred by decades of civil war. Despite its wealth, it suffers from extreme inequality, corruption, and high levels of violent crime, especially in the capital.
Best time to visit
Dry season May to October is generally the most comfortable for travel.
Safety
High risk. Violent crime, including armed robbery and carjackings, is common in Luanda. Kidnapping and extortion occur. Outside major cities, the country has poor infrastructure and limited security presence. Landmines from the civil war still exist in some rural areas.
Recommendations
Travel is not recommended for most people. Luanda has very high crime rates. Outside the capital, infrastructure is poor and security risks increase significantly. Only essential travel with proper security support should be considered.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Limited healthcare outside of Luanda. Malaria is widespread. Medical facilities are generally poor. Yellow fever vaccination is required.
Entry and exit
Visa required. Process can be bureaucratic and slow.
Laws
High levels of corruption. Laws are inconsistently applied. Drug trafficking carries heavy penalties.
Other notes
Angola has significant natural resources and potential, but decades of mismanagement and civil war have left deep structural problems. Tourism infrastructure is very limited outside of a few areas in Luanda.
