Overview

Country under Taliban control since 2021. Severe human rights restrictions, especially against women and girls. Ongoing terrorism threat from groups like ISIS-K. Occasional bombings from Pakistan. Travel is extremely dangerous and strongly discouraged.

Best time to visit

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November); avoid extreme summer heat and harsh winters in the mountains.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Very limited healthcare. High risk of disease and poor medical infrastructure. Medical evacuation is extremely difficult or impossible in most cases.

Entry and exit

Visa required. Travel is heavily restricted and not recommended by any government.

Laws

Extremely strict Islamic laws under Taliban rule. Women have very limited rights. Criticism of the regime or Islam can lead to severe punishment. Foreigners have been detained and killed.

Other notes

Afghanistan has incredible history and landscapes, but the current regime and security situation make it effectively off-limits for normal tourism. The country remains one of the most dangerous places in the world for travelers. Funnily enough, the Taliban are trying to promote tourism. Is on the American sanctions list, travel may cause issues entering the USA.

Emergency numbers: Police 119, Ambulance 112, Fire 102.
